Project Brief

Bhumijo, in partnership with Unilever, completed the renovation of 64 distribution centres’ toilets across the country. The project aimed to provide improved sanitation facilities for Unilever’s dealers, distributors, and employees who frequent these centres. By upgrading existing facilities and promoting better hygiene practices, the initiative seeks to enhance the overall workplace experience and contribute to a healthier workforce. Through this collaboration, Bhumijo and Unilever demonstrate the importance of private partnerships in addressing sanitation challenges and promoting social responsibility.

Hygienic & Comfortable Public Toilet Experience

Project Brief

Bhumijo is dedicated to enhancing the daily lives of the bazaar community and shoppers by providing well-designed, smart, and clean toilets within the bazaar compound. By offering affordable, dignified, and convenient sanitation services, Bhumijo ensures a comfortable experience for those who need to use the toilet multiple times a day. With plans to develop 8 new facilities in bazaars on government or private land, each capable of serving around 600 people daily, Bhumijo aims to test different revenue mixes to refine its business model. These mixes include additional components alongside fixed services such as toilets, drinking water, and advertisement spaces, ensuring operational excellence and profitability while serving the urban poor sustainably.

Digitization of Public Toilet Services

Project Brief

GSMA Project has assisted us to digitally transform our existing toilet facilities (8).

With the help of the funding, developed a smart toilet management system to improve the overall service quality and user experience. The technology helped us to introduce a digital payment system, automatic entry system, feedback gathering mechanism, sensor-based monitoring and auto flushing system. With the help of digital technology Bhumijo’s toilet facilities’ are monitored to ensure cleanliness, an odourless environment, and create a better user experience by providing a touchless experience.

Mobile application users can now subscribe and pay digitally for the toilet facility.

Hygienic & Smart Public Toilet Experience for Low-income Community

Project Brief

In Dhaka, where sanitation remains a challenge for the urban low-income population, Bhumijo’s “Swasti Ghar” initiative focuses on providing safe and hygienic public toilets, particularly for women. With only 9% of slum households having improved sanitation, and many relying on poorly maintained facilities, Bhumijo aims to address these issues through design, construction, and maintenance. By testing three different models in five market area public toilets, funded by the Transform grant, the project aims to create scalable solutions. Expected to be operational within six months, the project could generate £1,100 in monthly profit in its first year, benefiting around 2,000 subscribed users and 20,000 pay-per-use individuals monthly.

Hygienic, Smart & Affordable Public Sanitation for All

Project Brief

In its pursuit of expanding its impact, Bhumijo has gleaned several key insights. Location emerges as pivotal for sanitation centre success, with longer dwell times and limited alternatives fostering greater potential. While urinal services are widely utilised, increasing awareness is essential to boost female toilet usage. Pricing adjustments, particularly in subscription and pay-per-use fees, are deemed necessary for business improvement. While revenue from sanitation services covers operational costs, capital expenditures for new centre buildings remain challenging. Smart toilet technology aids in revenue tracking and quality assurance but requires further user-friendly improvements and awareness campaigns. Comprehensive training for staff is crucial to ensure service quality, and operational cost optimization includes introducing commission-based staff salaries and enhancing procurement practices. Advertisement revenue has proven beneficial, with additional services like showers and laundry showing promise, contingent upon location. Bhumijo aims to reach 100 centres by 2025, necessitating a funding requirement of USD 700,000 by the end of 2024, sought through a combination of grant funds and commercial investments.

Hands-Free Touchless Toilets

Project Brief

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Bhumijo collaborated with TRANSFORM and Acumen to deploy pedal-operated wash stations and toilets across three hospitals. These initiatives aimed to bolster infection control measures and minimise the risk of virus transmission in high-traffic public spaces, particularly within healthcare facilities. The innovative design of the pedal-operated systems allows for hands-free operation, facilitating enhanced hygiene practices and fostering a safer environment for patients, healthcare workers, and visitors alike. This collaborative effort showcases the power of collective action in addressing public health challenges and underscores the importance of innovative solutions for pandemic response.

Affordable Sanitation Service Ensuring Comfort and Dignity of Low-income Community

Project Brief

The main objective of this project is to design, construction, operations and management of inclusive public toilets in different cities of Bangladesh. The shared purposes of the project are to provide improved public sanitation services in Dhaka City through standardised operation and management services including enhancing the capacity of the local government institutions as well as awareness raising of the mass people, to influence change in policy aspects for reaching to wider audiences. Contributions from both the parties ensured shared learnings and use the learnings for advocacy at project areas and national levels.

Project Brief

Through Swaccho initiative, Bhumijo started working with JTI to build and operate 5 more facilities Inside Dhaka in 2022. Besides, we incorporated digital systems in Swaccho centres under this project. This project aims to develop and operate sanitation centres at busy urban hubs like markets, public nodes, and transport hubs. Bhumijo’s partnership with the government and private sector will enable the project to have land for development. We intend to ensure the quality of maintenance by getting real-time data through digital systems and ensuring operational sustainability the project will be operated to bring great health benefits to the urban dwellers.
